Scope

What does Post Construction Cleaning cover?

Building and renovation work leaves fine dust, drywall residue, paint marks, protective film and stickers on nearly every surface. Post Construction Cleaning, also called post-renovation cleaning, a builder’s clean or a final clean, is the detailed removal of that material after the trades have finished. The aim is a space ready for inspection, handover or move-in.

  • Dust from ledges, door frames, baseboards, vents and cabinet exteriors
  • Interior windows, sills and tracks
  • Kitchens and bathrooms, with protective film and labels removed
  • Hard floors and carpet

It is not construction work. Debris hauling, repairs and mould or hazardous-material work sit outside it.

Stages

Rough clean, final clean and touch-up: which do you need?

No official standard defines these stage names, so compare written scopes, not labels. Which combination suits you depends on your schedule, the number of trades and how long the space sits before handover.

Rough clean

Done while trades are finishing, or just after they leave.

  • Clears the heavy layer of dust
  • Lets later work proceed
  • About clearing, not finishing

Final clean

Done once all work is complete.

  • A detailed pass over every surface the occupant will touch or see
  • Fixtures, cabinets, windows, sills and floors
  • Protective film and labels removed where safe

Touch-up

Done shortly before inspection or move-in.

  • A short return for dust that has settled
  • Useful if the space sat for days or weeks
  • Follows a rough or final clean

Checklist

Dust

How is construction dust cleaned up?

Ontario’s guidance is to wash surfaces down with water or use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and to avoid dry sweeping and compressed air (Ontario’s silica guidance for construction projects, section 4.2). It is written for worksites and workers, so it sets no rule for your home.

Health Canada’s advice for home renovations is similar: clean hard floors and surfaces with a wet cloth or mop and, if possible, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter (Health Canada’s DIY projects and renovations page).

  • Wet methods or HEPA vacuums over dry sweeping
  • No compressed air

The US EPA describes a HEPA filter as able, in theory, to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns (US EPA, What is a HEPA filter?). That page covers air cleaners and HVAC filters, so it says nothing about how any particular vacuum performs.

Older residential properties

Older home: asbestos or lead?

Testing for and removing asbestos or lead belongs to the owner and the renovation side of a project, not to a cleaning visit.

  • Health Canada says residential properties built before 1991 may have lead-based paint, which should not be sanded, scraped or burned (Health Canada’s DIY projects and renovations page)
  • For asbestos, it advises hiring a professional to test before renovating, avoiding disturbance of suspect materials, and leaving vermiculite insulation alone (Asbestos and your health)
  • IHSA summarises O. Reg. 278/05, s. 10 as requiring an asbestos examination before demolition, alteration or repair of a building (IHSA, Asbestos)

Who that applies to on your project is a question for your contractor or the Ministry of Labour. Ask your contractor whether testing was done before you book a clean.

FAQ

Post Construction Cleaning questions

Your inspection and handover dates decide it. One approach is a final clean before the inspection, then a touch-up visit for anything it finds. Tell us your dates when you request a quote so the stages can be planned around them.
Size, condition and the stages you choose all change the answer. A small touch-up is a very different job from a final clean of a whole renovated floor. Share room counts, photos and your deadline with your quote request.
A rough clean comes first and clears the heaviest dust so later work can proceed. A final clean comes last and is about detail, covering every surface the occupant will touch or see. A touch-up deals with dust that settles afterwards.
Testing and removal belong on the renovation side of the project, not a cleaning visit. Health Canada advises professional testing for asbestos before renovating, and notes residential properties built before 1991 may have lead-based paint. Ask your contractor whether testing was done.
Usually not. Hauling construction waste, repairs and mould or hazardous-material work sit outside cleaning. Ask what a quote covers instead of relying on its label, and check that leftover materials are removed before the clean.
